Psychically Connected

She awoke at precisely 5:28AM. Why that time? She imagined it had to do with him. They were psychically connected, after all.

The first thought to enter her mind was, “He must have landed by now…but safely?”

His flight left at midnight and was to land nearly four hours later, so he must be on the ground by now. The hurricane had luckily cleared away just in time. He was likely still at the airport, even though he only had carry-on. Nothing goes quickly at the airport, after all, and when you have a piece of equipment which “looks potentially dangerous” he’ll likely have to unpack it and show them precisely what a helium leak detector/ mas-spectrometer actually is and explain extensively how very un-dangerous it is.

As she lay there wide awake she imagined him getting a rental car and then heading straight to the hospital at which he was to work finding an elusive leak which had evaded his clients for ten days prior to their desperate plea for his assistance. Not that he would start work right then and there. No, he would just want to know precisely where he was to go after a quick nap and a reviving shower.

She frowned as she thought, “But would he be able to get a hotel room so late in the morning?"

This is the tourist season with vacationers coming to the tropical island for a last bit of fun in the waning days of summer before schools returned to session. Would there be a room at all for him? She sighed and hoped he’d be all right.

Just as she had drifted off to sleep the phone rang and she rushed over to his side of the bed to answer it. She knew it would be him.

“Just wanted to let you know, I’m safe. Just got out of the airport,” he said, sounding a lot less stressed than he had been the previous day when he barely had remembered to give her a quick kiss before leaving. “I’m having a hard time getting a hotel room. They might not let me in cuz check in time is 3PM. I may have to take a nap in the car and go to work all dirty and grungy. Can you believe that? ”

She smiled. She most certainly could. They were, after all, psychically connected.
